These are collector coins whose value was based more on the collector worth than the amount of gold that was actually contained within them. These gold coins have always sold for a higher value than gold bullion coins, many times being sold for multiple times their actual worth.

Gold coins that actually contained gold bullion on the other hand have always sold based on the amount of gold content that is actually within the coin itself. The mark ups for these coins are smaller than the mark-up on numismatic coins because it is based on the current value of gold at the time of the sale. However, the American Gold Eagle gold coins have been listed as the best selling gold coins in the world to invest in. These are hearty coins like the Krugerrand, and many people around the world have been investing in them in large quantities. At one point in time the Canadian Maple Leaf gold coins were as popular as the American Gold Eagles, but they scratch and damage easily due to the softness of the gold in them.
